Causes & Effect Essay: Causes of Students to Take Up Jobs

Recently, students have started to take up jobs in addition to their academic lifestyle. Because of this phenomenon, many of them choose to work rather than to study. The question is what causes them to make such decisions? The contributors to this issue are financial problems, work experience and improvement in self-awareness.

First of all, students take up jobs because of financial-related issues. Most students, who are in lower-middle-class neighborhoods, work to earn additional money for academic fees, personal expenditures and miscellaneous usages such as rental fees. Some of them would also work in order to reduce the financial burden of their families, others would take up jobs to avoid study loans as they will not afford to pay back the loans even when they enter the workplace after graduation. In short, financial-related problems cause students to work rather than to study.

Secondly, students choose to work so that they will experience work life before graduation. By working, they will build up a stronger mentality to help them face the harsh work life such as having the ability to accept harsh and negative feedback from the superior. They will also learn to gain experiences from failures such as facing rejections on a business proposal and having a failed group project. Therefore, students take up jobs to adapt themselves in a working environment beforehand.

Lastly, students choose work over studies to improve their self-awareness. When they are in a workplace, they will learn to control themselves from doing any inappropriate behavior such as checking on their social media frequently at work and cancelling a work discussion without a valid reason. They will also learn to manage their time better and become more motivated to do well in their studies. As a result, the self-awareness of students will be improved at work.

In conclusion, there are many reasons why students choose work over studying. Financial problems, work experience and improvement in self-awareness are among the elements that influence students to make such decisions. Though students should have a balance between their jobs and studies, it is a matter of time before they have to decide between the two options.
